Teaching and Learning across Cultures in College
Teaching effectively across cultures is a daily challenge and opportunity for faculty at the University of New Mexico. Students at UNM reflect culturally diverse populations with especially Hispano, Native, Mestizo, and Caucasian European American students in classes. International students, Asian American, and African American students add to this cultural mix and for faculty this can be a pedagogical challenge to negotiate.

This interactive workshop will offer a review of several theories and models of teaching across cultures including models from the facilitator’s own research. Activities will be facilitated in the session to assist participants in applying models to teaching practice, discuss ideas for application with peers, and consider how personal cultural norms, values, assumptions, and beliefs of faculty play out in the classroom. A strengths based approach will be emphasized for both teaching practices of individual faculty and learning processes of students across cultures.
Facilitator: Alicia F. Chávez, Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Leadership & Organizational Learning
