What is Peace Studies?   Thinking & Acting, Both Locally & Globally

UNM Peace Studies is holding a Peace Fair
       When: March 1, 2005 from 12:00 to 8:00
      Where: Student Union Building.

Our Peace Fair is a celebration of the peacemaking activities occurring both on UNM campus and in the greater Albuquerque and New Mexico communities, and a chance to educate UNM faculty, staff and students about the Peace Studies Program. Please join us.

Peace Studies is a program dedicated to the study of the causes of violence and alternatives to violence. The Program is devoted to the practice of conflict resolution on all levels, from the interpersonal, to the societal, to the international. As such, Peace Studies encompasses an undergraduate interdisciplinary minor program that includes courses and electives from over 15 departments within Arts and Sciences and other colleges of the University of New Mexico.

We are governed by a Program Committee, which includes faculty, students and community partners. Our broader membership includes individuals inside and outside of UNM committed to and engaged in peacemaking activities.

Peace Studies members include therapists for victims of domestic violence and other traumatic experiences, mediators in the various court systems and the public schools, counselors of conscientious objectors to military service, reconciliation experts in family and community conflicts, and peacemakers in war-torn societies throughout the world.

Our March 1 Peace Fair is both a celebration of the peacemaking activities of our members, and an opportunity to draw more students and faculty into the minor program, while welcoming new community members. In this sprit, our Peace Fair will include numerous displays by student and community organizations devoted to peace, as well as information about Peace Studies courses and events.

At 1:00 PM and at 3:00 PM we will convene two panels, each drawing together academics and community activists working on either local or global conflict resolution. Both panels are designed to illustrate the dynamism and synergy between the skills and insights that come from mediation work within families and institutions on the one hand, and the practice of conflict resolution in cross-cultural, national and international arenas, on the other.

Finally at 5:30 PM we will have a keynote address by Melinda Smith, Peace Studies member and mediation expert currently involved in reconciliation work in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. We invite you to participate in our Peace Fair, and to join our Program, whether as student, teacher, staff member or community partner.
