LSAT Study and Preparation

Purpose

One of the goals of PAD UNM Pre-Law is to help our members, the school, and our general community. In pursuance of that goal, we have set up a new program to help people structure their self-study time to do better on the LSAT.

At each meeting, we invite both members of PAD UNM Pre-Law and members from the UNM community to join us in looking over official LSAT study materials free of charge. We do not currently have an official proctor for the study session so it is primarily group learning and group teaching. Many of our members have already taken courses or taken the actual LSAT and are willing to share their information with those of us who have not. Better than any lecture will be the problem-solving skills you will develop!

Every month we proctor a mock LSAT. At the first meeting of each month and at the last practice LSAT we ask our members and test-takers to tell us when they would like the next one. We do the best we can to accomodate everyone and hope to expand this opportunities in the future.

What is the LSAT?

The LSAT is the Law School Admissions Test. It is a requirement of all ABA Accredited Law Schools. The test is comprised of five sections and lasts about six hours. For more information, please visit http://lsac.org .

Why Study for the LSAT?

The LSAT is a very learnable test once you know how. However, there is no one correct way to take it. The study style, preparation, and test-taking strategies each person uses is going to be as unique as the people applying to take it.

Self-Study is when a person utilizes LSAT study material on their own. People who do this are usually those who can keep themselves focused for a set time and can guide their own studies. It is also for those who are taking plenty of credit hours and/or have extra-curricular obligations such as work, social fraternity/sorority life, and/or families that prevents them from attending formalized classes. Many LSAT study materials come with the tips and tricks taught in formalized programs but are not proctored. PAD UNM Pre-Law attempts to help those utilizing self-study by helping them identify their weak points, researching the methods, and bringing in proctors to help when possible.

There are also many programs out there designed to help those interested in taking the LSAT. Many of these come with tutoring opportunities in addition to the LSAT study materials. Members of PAD Law Fraternity, International receive discounts for many of these programs including Kaplan and The Princeton Review.
