ADMISSIONS INSTRUCTIONS


Read these instructions carefully. Applicants are responsible for submitting necessary documents to both the Department of Psychology and the UNM Graduate Admissions office.
We strongly recommend that you print the department of psychology application checklist to use as reference (some of these links will take you to another department at UNM). Applications will be considered incomplete if you are missing any of required documents. Please plan ahead and begin assembling these materials well in advance. Applicants are admitted to the doctoral program, a terminal master's degree program is not offered.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

 Fall semester: Only those applications received and completed by January 15* are guaranteed to receive full consideration. After this date, late applications will only be reviewed if positions remain.

* Please note that the 2012 deadline will be December 15th instead of January 15th.

The Institution Code is 4845. The Department Code for Psychology is 2016. Please note that there are GRE sub codes for different areas in psychology (i.e. clinical, health…), it is best to use the general psychology code of 2016.

Application packages missing any of the above materials will be considered incomplete. Recommended preparation for graduate training:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology or related fields.
  • At least 15 semester hours in psychology, with at least one course in statistics and an upper-division lab course or independent research in psychology
  • Coursework in mathematics and the sciences; biology, physics or chemistry

Criteria for Admissions:
  • GRE scores, including the Psychology Subject Test
  • Grades, particularly in advanced courses in psychology
  • Correspondence between the student's interests and the strengths of our program and faculty
  • Letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the student's potential for doctorate work

Admission Procedure:
  • Identify a general research area on the Department Application sheet that you are interested in.
  • Read about the faculty research in these areas and identify one or two potential faculty advisors on the department application you are interested in working with (this is an important step).
  • You are encouraged to contact individual faculty members: Be sure they are accepting new students, if you have any questions concerning your potential graduate career here at UNM psychology department, questions concerning research assistantship availability, or specific questions concerning on-going research projects.
  • Formally apply to the University of New Mexico.
  • Submit all required documents to the Office of Graduate Studies and the Psychology department (as indicated above).
