The
Department of Psychology has a student advisor for undergraduate
and graduate students. You should spend time with an advisor early
in your education. Once you declare psychology as a major or minor,
you should consult with the psychology department advisor to help
you to select the best coursework needed to pursue your personal
and career goals, and to meet departmental requirements. This advance
planning can help to ensure that you will be able to get the courses
you need and want.
For advisement,
please sign in at the Main Office in Logan 182. Only issues that can be resolved in less than 15 minutes are appropriate for walk-in service.
To schedule an appointment for other academic issues (ex. academic & career planning, etc.) please call 277-4121.
Please be prepared! Bring a current EProgress report or transcripts and any other supporting documents or forms to your advising session.
Disclaimer for all students utilizing walk-in hours:
In the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, etc., walk-in hours may be canceled without advance notice. Please call 277-4121 to confirm hours.
Psychology
majors and minors enroll in the College of Arts
and Sciences, which has its own requirements
for admission and graduation. If you are not already enrolled
in the College and aware of its requirements, you should consult
the UNM Catalog
and visit the college advisement
center in Ortega Hall, Room 251.
After completing 90 credit hours you must complete a degree application.
The appropriate forms must be obtained from the College of Arts
and Sciences Advisement Center. Psychology majors and minors must
visit the Student Advisor to review coursework completed and additional
work needed in order to fulfill departmental requirements and
signatures on the application for degree. Students who do not
complete this procedure will receive an academic hold on their
student account and will not be able to register.
If
you are transferring credits from another university, you must
have these approved through the office of Undergraduate Admissions
(consult the UNM
Catalog and the college advisement center). Transfer coursework
in psychology must also be specifically approved by the associate
chair of the department. Transfer credit will be approved if:
UNM accepts the credit, it was completed within the past 10 years,
if a grade of C or better was earned, and if the course is essentially
equivalent to a course offered in the department. No more than
18 hours may be transferred towards the major in Psychology; no
more than 13 hours for the minor. Before you come to the
department for transfer credit approval, assemble the materials
that will help in evaluating your coursework: your Transfer
Credit Evaluation Statement from the office of Admissions or by
using my.unm.edu, a copy of an
advisement transcript, a catalog of the school describing the
courses you took, course description, syllabi and/or textbooks
used in the courses, etc. Bring these with you when you come to
obtain transfer credit in psychology. Only the associate chair
can approve courses for transfer credit to count toward the psychology
major or minor.
