Errors in Copy Typewriting Frank A. Logan University of New Mexico (1999) Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 25, 1760-1773. Abstract A systematic analysis of the typographical errors of one skilled female typist led to the identification of a number of error factors that often act conjointly. Substitution errors indicated that she had acquired a cognitive map of the keyboard and then controlled her fingers by spelling the to-be-typed words covertly. Accordingly, some typographical errors were attributed in part to errors of inner speech. Intrusion errors revealed both habit factors and a response perseveration tendency. A handedness effect and omission errors indicated response error factors and transpositions indicated temporal error factors. The skilled typist is thus viewed as having learned to inhibit error tendencies, and errors such as antedating response and doubling were interpreted in terms of disinhibition. Method Over a period of years during the 1960's and 1970's, a female secretary (E.P.) voluntarily filled time between typing manuscripts by copytyping selected abstracts onto filing cards. Her instructions were that her usual standards of perfectly clean copy were not necessary because the cards were only to be used for my literature review project. She worked on an electric typewriter with a cloth ribbon that did not duplicate letters if a letter-key was held down.į In scanning this corpus for errors, I attended only to the body of the abstract, I excluded proper names, numbers, and upper¬case acronyms such as UCS and PRE, and I did not count repeat errors in the same abstract. Because of her instructions, even where E.P. had corrected an error, it was usually possible (95%) to identify the error strokes that had been partially erased and then overstruck. In order to get a reasonable sample of low-frequency errors, I ultimately set a target of 3,000 keystroke errors. Typographical Errors by E.P. (categorical listing) NOTE: Asterisks indicate errors involving words w/double letters.
