CHRISTIANITY EXTRA CREDIT GUIDELINES

A couple of Christian congregations in town have graciously agreed to allow individual students and very small groups (no more than 3 people) to attend some religious services at their respective institutions.  If you are interested, you must follow these guidelines:

  1. Contact the congregation first, to get final approval for your visit (contact phone numbers below).  Do not simply show up at a service without getting prior approval.
  2. Show up on time, dressed very respectfully (no obscene or excessively sexy/casual clothing).  Remain quiet and attentive throughout the service.  No headphones/I-pods or cell phones allowed, and NO NOTE-TAKING.  Review the questions below, and remember to keep an eye out for the answers.  Make some quick notes in the car FOLLOWING the service, but no notes DURING the service.  Any disrespectful behavior will result in immediate failure in the class!
  3. After attending the service, answer the following questions, in essay form, and turn the essay in to me or one of my GA’s within one week of the visit (include the date and location of your visit in the essay).  You must be ready to sit down for a brief interview with us to answer questions about your visit, so only turn these in during our office hours, and not during class time.  Essays dropped off without the brief interview will not be given credit.

In essay form (typed, double-spaced, intro/body/conclusion), address the following issues:

1.  How did the service begin, and who was in charge of the service?
2.  What were the surroundings like, and what sorts of religious objects were present?
3.  How did the service proceed, and what was the topic of the sermon?
4.  How did the service finish?
5.  Was there anything that confused you about the service?
6.  What fascinated you most about the service? How did attending help you to understand the Christian tradition better?

Christian extra credit visit options (in no particular order, any of these would be fine) NOTE: the services will usually be on Sunday morning; make sure to confirm the correct time.
