Religion at UNM:
Research, Scholarship, and Creative Arts

A great deal of research, writing, and artistic expression at UNM focuses on religion and spirituality. To learn about it, monitor this webpage regularly, scan the biographical sketches and curriculum vitae of the Associated Faculty.

In addition to drawing on the outstanding scholarship and creativity of a broad array of UNM faculty, the Religious Studies Program hosts a research center called the Southwest Institute on Religion and Civil Society. SIRCS currently pursues funded research in four areas:

  • In the United States: the interface between religious congregations and democratic organizations: When does civic engagement foster congregational development?
  • In the Middle East: the resources for democratic life within Islam as a tradition and within contemporary Muslim societies.
  • In the United States: the strategic and organizational challenges confronting a grassroots political organization attempting to project power to the national level.
  • In Central America: efforts to exert democratic political influence from within civil society, drawing on both post-liberationist and traditional sources of religious influence (just underway).

To promote research and creative work on religion, the Religious Studies Program sponsors a program of periodic public lectures and brown bag lunches for interested faculty, students, religious leaders and community members.
