PRECIOUS PROMISE
by May Loughmiller Peck
1939-1957
Oh I love to read my Bible
When I'm all alone with God,
And dwell on the time that's coming
When I rest beneath the sod.
There's no disturbing feature
As I sit and meditate
And pIan my life for Jesus
Before it is too late.
The Bible is God's precious gift
He gave to man to read
Some read the scriptures daily
And some give little heed.
There's all to gain
And naught to lose
If we choose to obey
But all is lost and nothing gained
If we chance to lose the way.
The Bible says "Draw nigh to God
And he'll draw nigh to you."
I rest upon this promise
Because I know it's true,
So all my life I'll serve Him
And I know he cares for me.
For soon this life is ended
And we face Eternity.

When Sam Clements was a school boy at Buck's Grove he often rode a horse from the Clements home on the old Heath place, to school. One day the horse rubbed off the halter and Sam was left to walk home. On the way home he was playing "horse" with a chum a Overholtz boy, and had the bit in the boy's mouth driving him down the road. A spring storm came up and lightning struck the Overholtz boy a fatal bolt. He is buried on the Kroth homestead as his parents lived one mile west of the Kroth farm.

Laura Loughmiller admits that when she was a girl, she was so timid about riding that she scarcely ever let the pony get into a gallop. Laura and her sister, May, rode ponies to get the mail at Avoca. Because there were two bad mud holes in that road, driving a cart or buggy was a risk and trouble. The sisters used a side saddle that had been given to them by their cousin, Minnie Harris Bottom.
