There had to be a "windbreak" planted as they had experienced damaging results from high wind, which blew down the new barn. This happened about a month after they were married. So, they planted a couple of rows of mulberry trees on the west of the Orchard and Cedar trees north of the house. As it was Spring, there were crops to be planted and new fences to build, so they were a very bush couple. Things didn't go smooth even before they were married. As the little verse says: "God hath not promised Sun without Rain, Joy without Sorrow, Peace without Pain."
John had a young team of gray horses named Mike and Deck who had the "Run-a-way" Spirit, and were never to be trusted.
