The Region's Beginning

As far as can be determined, the first time a regional group for the Rocky Mountain areas was seriously considered was at the close of the opening session of the 39th annual meeting of the National Association of Physical Plant Administrators (the predecessor of APPA), which was held at the University of Michigan in 1951.

The Rocky Mountain initially consisted of institutions from the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. Representatives from some of the Texas border institutions have also been regular RMA members since the regions inception. The Canadian province of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories were not included in the region until the late 1970's.
