Overview

The Journal of Exercise Physiology (JEPonline, ISSN 1097-9751), published by the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP), is a professional peer reviewed internet-based journal devoted to original research, research-related reviews, and commentaries in exercise physiology.  Currently, JEPonline is published bi-monthly.

To submit a manuscript for review, email the manuscript as an attachment to the JEPonline Editor-in-Chief, Jon Linderman, PhD at Jon.Linderman@notes.udayton.edu.  A cover letter stating any potential conflicts of interest, as well as copyright transfer should also be attached to the email.  If necessary, you may contact Jon by phone: (937) 229-4207 or FAX: (937) 229-4244.  Please note that we prefer manuscripts typed in Microsoft Word software.  Upon receipt, email correspondence verifying manuscript receipt will be sent informing the submitting author of the manuscript number and estimated time of the review process.

Please adhere to the directions that follow with regard to submission and manuscript format requirements.

 Author Responsibilities

Manuscript content and accuracy are the responsibility of the authors.  Authors must submit a disclosure statement regarding authorship and transfer of copyright (see below).  Original copy of disclosure is preferred; however, if necessary, a faxed copy is acceptable.  In order to ease the difficulty of multiple authors from various locations signing a single disclosure, if necessary, JEPonline will accept multiple copies of the disclosure, as well as disclosures with electronic signatures.  Disclosure statements should either be emailed or FAXed as identified above, or mailed to:

Jon Linderman, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief: JEPonline, c/o Department of Health and Sport Science, The University of Dayton, 300 College Park, Dayton, OH 45469-1210

The disclosure statement should include the title of the submitted work and certify the following:

1)     That all authors have participated substantially in the submitted work.

2)     That all authors have reviewed and approve of the final version of the work and take responsibility for it’s content.

3)     That the manuscript is original and unpublished material, except in abstract form or oral report, and is not under consideration by another journal.

4)     The disclosure statement must be signed and dated by all authors.

5)     The author(s) undersigned transfer all copyright ownership to the JEPonline in the event that the work is published by JEPonline.

6)     Fax signatures and electronic signatures are legally binding.

If a manuscript if not accepted, or is withdrawn prior to publication, the disclosure statement is null and void.

Authors should inform the Editor of any potential conflicts of interests.  These include, but are not limited to, financial arrangements, organizational affiliations, or other relationships that may constitute a conflict of interest regarding the submitted work.  This information should be contained in the emailed cover letter.  In addition, authors must obtain permission from all persons named in the acknowledgement section.  Authors should include in the emailed cover letter that such permission has been granted.

If human subjects were involved in the study, the manuscript must provide a statement regarding the use of Institutional Review Board protocol, signed consent forms, and compliance with additional guidelines such as HIPPA where appropriate.

 Review Process

The editorial staff of JEPonline has developed the journal to be a leader in research publications.  We are aware of the potential for reviewer bias in the peer blind review process, and as such, do not keep submitting authors blinded to the reviewers of their manuscript.  Similarly, we do not blind reviewers to the authors of the manuscripts, unless requested by the reviewer.  Please refer to the editorials concerning the peer review process for further information regarding this topic.  To ensure ethical and professional conduct of the peer reviewers, JEPonline has a Review Board that completes all peer reviews.  All members of the Review Board follow stringent guidelines in how they review manuscripts, and their presence on the Board indicates that they adhere to a high code of ethics regarding manuscript reviews.

JEPonline does not strive to maintain a rejection rate for submitted manuscripts.  Manuscripts are either suitable for publication after 1 round of reviews, or require additional work.  If the manuscript can be improved, then we offer the authors the information needed to improve the manuscript, and leave it to the authors to decide on whether they want to continue revising the manuscript and complete a re-submission.  Certainly, there is the possibility that some manuscripts may be far too handicapped by inappropriate methodology for publication.  However, such would be the only reason for an outright rejection.

The editorial staff will work with authors to improve manuscripts.  Such collaboration could consist of clarifying the purpose and hypotheses, aiding methodological descriptions, improving the statistical procedures used to analyze the data, and contributing to data interpretation.  We recognize the expertise of the submitting authors, and want to work with them to make their manuscript as good as possible.

International submissions are welcomed.  Internet-based research publication has tremendous potential to spread scientific knowledge around the world.  We recognize the responsibility we have to support submissions from scientists whose native language is not English, and we will offer our services to correct grammar if necessary.

Manuscript Formatting

Authors should submit their manuscript, pre-formatted to JEPonline requirements.  Authors should download the appropriate Template manuscript (either original research or review manuscript, and add their content to this document.  Both template documents are formatted using Microsoft Word software.  Please make note of the formatting features of the Template document (such as letter case, point font, color, etc.).
A concise summary of manuscript features follows.

List references in order of citation using the reference number in parentheses, within the sentence.  For example;  “Our results are supported by similar studies performed with both animal and human models (1,2,3).”   Refer to the following reference styles.

Tables

Use the Word Table feature.  Select Table from the header, then Insert, then Table, and then select the correct rows and column numbers.  Highlight the table now inserted into the text and then select Table, Table Auto Format, and then pre-formatted option of Colorful 2

Use mean±SD data for all tables.  Use the Symbol for ± (select Insert, Symbol, make sure the font is Symbol, and then double click the ± symbol).  Do not use an underlined + sign (+).

All table content, including the table legend should be 10 font.

Use symbols to represent significance results - *, ^, #, ~, as well as any you decide from the Symbols font selections.

Figures

JEPonline publishes in color, so use color to aid in improving the clarity of figures.  However, do not over-use color just because you can use it.  Figures are best on a white background, with black axes and axis labels, with color used to identify group symbol and/or line differences in line graphs, and bar condition/group differences in bar graphs. Use a graph legend to explain all symbol and/or color differences.

Review Manuscripts

The format is similar for the research manuscript.  However, provide a header, sub-header and page number contents list before the Abstract (see Template for Review Manuscripts).

Use headings and sub-headings to appropriately organize the content.

Letters to the Editor

Submit these as a letter to the Editor-in-Chief.

Where pertinent, identify the manuscript and reference of the manuscript that forms the basis for the letter.

Provide a reference list for all cited references.

Word all letters in a professional manner.
