Albuquerque is the site of many novels set on Route 66, from Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me Ultima (Santa Rosa) and Tortuga (Central Avenue, Albuquerque); two earlier novelists such as Paul Horgan and Harvey Fergusson. It is home to a half dozen prominent national authors: besides Anaya, Tony Hillerman, famous for his detective stories set on the Navajo reservations; Edward Abbey, who lived here while studying on Route 66 at the University of New Mexico; Roger Zelasny, of science fiction fame. If one includes the number of authors—particularly Native American—who studied at UNM, there is an extraordinary convergence of talent. Paula Gunn Allen, Simon Ortiz, Luci Tapahonso, Joy Harjo, Leslie Silko, and Denise Chavez. The university’s English department includes a dozen lesser-known authors, including yours truly. |
