Today, some 75% of St. Louis’s metropolitan population live in the suburbs. Was this centrifugal force the fault of Route 66, which opened up the small towns for suburbs? Roads precede development, and Route 66 pushed St. Louis West, extending its gateway through Kirkwood, Fenton, and out as far as Times Beach, 15 miles from the city center. At what point do cities become driven by roads, rather than the other way around? |
