Dear Mr.and Mrs.Anderson,
I know that you are interested in receiving Roger's first report from third grade.
Roger is slowly adjusting himself to the group. On the playground Roger does not always play fairly with the children. His reaction towards correction is to sulk or refuse to do anything. In the room he continually bothers his neighbors by talking, by singing to himself, by throwing materials such as erasers, crayons or paper. He does not obey rules cheerfully and promptly. He pushes or trips children in line. Roger appears to be nervous and high strung. He often uses his feelings as an excuse for not working. He says that he feels tired or feels sick if the work is not to his liking.
Considering the study habits that third grade children should attain I find that Roger's span of attention is very short. He is so restless and is doing so many other things that he does not always hear directions. He lounges in his seat appearing tired and incapable of giving sustained attention. Roger does not complete assignments as he should because he wastes so much time getting started. In an audience situation Roger is not attentive. He contributes to the discussions only when called on; then he speaks very low.
The achievement of Roger in school subjects is as follows: In reading Roger is barely up to third grade standard. He reads with understanding. He needs to work to overcome lip reading and finger pointing. In arithmetic Roger works very slowly. He understands the problems but he is hampered in doing his best work because he counts. He does this by tapping, by blinking his eyes and by using his fingers. All the one hundred addition and subtraction facts must be memorized so that he can overcome this habit. He is not up to grade in spelling mainly because of his poor span of attention. His writing is neat. He exercises care in letter formation and his alignment is good.
In the special subjects art and music, Roger does what the group does in music. In art he shows originality and interest.
I hope that Roger will improve his work and study habits so that he can work up to his capacity.
Yours sincerely,
Irene Mungovan
