MISSION

The mission of the Tutor and Mentor Program is to encourage student-athletes at the University of New Mexico to reach their academic goals through: enhancing their study skills, support student-athletes with the transition from high school to college and assisting student-athletes with balancing the requirements of being a student and an athlete.

GOALS of our TUTORS and MENTORS

The main goal of tutor is to assist student-athletes in becoming effective and independent learners. Tutors recognize that their role is distinct from, but supportive of, faculty and teaching assistants who are responsible for deciding course content, presenting material, and grading students’ performances. By contrast, they are responsible for exploring students’ individual learning needs, helping them develop the motivation, skills, and conceptual and factual knowledge student-athlete's need to meet their own educational goals and the expectations of the faculty. Tutors may also address non-academic problems, which hinder learning and may refer student-athletes to appropriate resources when necessary.

Tutors and mentors are accountable to the university on two levels: by promoting student-athletes intellectual growth and learning by establishing relationships with them based on mutual respect and trust. As university employees, they are responsible for following the policies and procedures of the tutorial unit and for cooperating with the staff that directly supervise their work.

  • In short, is is the tutor and mentors job to provide student-athletes with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom:

  • Provide professional service

  • Provide ethical service

  • Encourage proactive learning

  • Improve literacy skills

  • Strengthen academic confidence

  • Discourage academic fraud

  • Help student-athletes become active, independent learners
