My courses engage students by combining academic readings and community-based research. By combining the two approaches, students learn to work on meaningful projects which can have a positive impact in both academic and public communities. News: Students win "Best Poster" at UNM Research Symposium
For over a century, urban community gardens have served as meeting locations
for communities to address hunger and homelessness, individual and community
health, nationalism, and local economic needs, to name but a few purposes. In
this course, students will read about the history and purpose of community
gardens in the United States while learning fundamental concepts in cultural
anthropology. In addition, students will partner with organizations
and individuals in the Barelas Community to conduct community based research
and continue development of the Barelas Community Garden.
Note: This course requires participation off campus during and occasionally, outside of course hours.

This course will introduce students to video production
methods used in anthropological research. Current uses of video documentation
by anthropologists involves the study of contemporary cultures and focus
on a wide variety of themes such as cultural expression, communication
of ideas, food harvesting, artistic practices, and discussion of ethics
involving the representation and documentation of culturally sensitive
activities or behaviors.
The first portion of the class will involve readings
and screening of videos that reflect different uses of video documentation
in the field; the second portion of the course, students will learn video
editing (Final Cut Pro); and in the last portion students have an opportunity
to work in small groups to assist with production of short videos documenting
Research Service Learning Program projects.
Course Requirements: Critical evaluation of movies and readings; research and develop a script for documenting the Research Service Learning Program projects; assist with video production.

When La Posada is closed and you want a snack do you go to your garden and pick fresh vegetables? Do you wish the empty lot on the corner was not filled with broken glass? Wonder what these questions have to do with cultural anthropology? In this new course students will read urban ethnographies and address themes in cultural anthropology. Students will spend extended periods of time off-campus to work closely with the Barelas Community Center while researching, designing, developing, and maintaining a community garden.

In this new course students will learn to evaluate and apply a combination
of urban ethnographic research methods in a community-based research, service,
and learning project with the Barelas Community Center . Students will partner
with community leaders to address theoretical and ethical concerns about
urban research projects, use research methodologies in a collaborative research
project, and present final research findings in creative ways to both academic
and community audiences.
