The program is aimed at promoting research cooperation between Japan and the United States. The EDD will select 15 masters, doctoral and post-doctoral students to do research in Japan in the fields of renewable energy, environmental energy, environmentally-related nanotechnology and nanophotonics. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan and the State of New Mexico signed an agreement that both sides would promote cooperative research and development. As part of this agreement the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan with the cooperation of METI and the State of New Mexico, designed a program that will provide students and trainees from New Mexico an opportunity to conduct research projects in Japan at some of that country’s premier research facilities. All successful candidates will be given a brief training on Japanese culture by EDD, and the 12 months of overseas research is expected to begin between January and March, 2010. Program Background: After a “Memorandum on Cooperation in the field of Research, Development & Demonstration” was signed by The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan and the State of New Mexico, on May 1, 2009, efforts to coordinate R&D activities began. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan (with the cooperation of METI, Japan and the State of New Mexico) agreed to act as host organizations.
