Duration of
Eligibility
Scholarships are applicable to Fall and Spring semesters only. Students
must be enrolled in a minimum of at least 12 credit hours for the award to
be disbursed. Most scholarships are awarded for eight (8) consecutive
semesters. This includes each semester in which the student was ineligible
to receive the award. An exception is made for students on a co-op program
or a pre-approved leave of absence. While on the Co-op Program the student
will not receive a scholarship award. It will be reinstated when he/she
returns to UNM and registers for a full-time course load. A student is no
longer eligible for the scholarship upon graduation, whether or not the
student has received the scholarship for eight (8) consecutive semesters.
Students may not apply for any unused semester of eligibility toward
graduate or professional school, or for other purposes. Additionally, you
will forfeit your scholarship if you choose to attend another college or
institution at any time.
Non-renewal of Scholarship and Appeal Process
If the recipient does not meet the eligibility requirements, the
scholarship will not be renewed. Please visit the
Petition Process portion of this web site
for detailed information regarding the appeal process for specific
programs.
Leave
of Absence
If you wish to interrupt your education for church mission, military
service, co-op programs or medical reasons, you must submit a written
request for a leave of absence to the Scholarship Office explaining the
request with corresponding documentation. If you are on leave of absence
but still enrolled at UNM, you must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. for all hours
enrolled during the leave of absence. While you are on approved leave of
absence you will not receive your scholarship; instead it will be held for
you until you return to UNM. To reactivate scholarship eligibility after
receiving an approved leave of absence, students must notify the
Scholarship Office at least one month, but no more than two months, prior
to the start of the semester he or she will be returning. A leave of
absence request that has not been approved prior to a student's exit of
the University may not be approved.
National or International Student Exchange Programs
If you are participating in a national or international exchange program,
a 3.0 G.P.A. and 12 credit hours each semester is required for maintaining
your scholarship at the University of New Mexico.
Discontinuance
You claim a scholarship by registering full-time for classes and using the
scholarship to pay your tuition and other fees. If you then drop below the
minimum requirements, do not attend or, once enrolled, discontinue for
any reasons, the scholarship will be canceled and you may be billed for
the scholarship amount. If you need to discontinue because of illness,
injury, or extenuating circumstances, please complete the
Petition Process.
Graduation Semester
You may request a reduction in the credit hour requirement on certain
scholarships during the last semester prior to your graduation (although
it can not be less than 12 credit hours) unless you are obligated by
contract to take more. You must notify the Scholarship Office of your
intentions.
