DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM

CONFERENCE ON SPATIAL INFORMATION THEORY XII

The COSIT Doctoral Colloquium is an excellent opportunity for PhD students to present their research in a supportive environment to an international audience of researchers, industry and fellow students. Students at any stage of their PhD are encouraged to apply: the Colloquium is an ideal forum for presenting research in the early or planning stages, as well as work that is nearing completion. Participants can expect to receive valuable feedback on issues such as how to identify and refine research questions, how to orally present research, and how to publish research, as well as insights into how to successfully complete a PhD in an interdisciplinary field. Typically, presentation topics are related to a PhD student's doctoral dissertation research, but any research topic appropriate for COSIT may be presented, as long as the student is the primary author of the work.

The Doctoral Colloquium is being organized by Sarah Battersby and Amy Lobben. Although the conference program is not yet finalized, the Doctoral Colloquium is currently scheduled for Friday, October 16. Should you have questions please send an email to Sarah at BATTERSB [at] mailbox.sc.edu or Amy at lobben [at] uoregon.edu

Submission and stylesheets

Students are required to submit a brief summary of their work (no more than 1500 words), along with a brief biography (no more than 300 words) via EasyChair.  The summary should follow the LNCS stylesheets for which can be found here, but the abstract is optional and should be no longer than 100 words if used. The biography should outline your academic background and research interests, and should indicate the current stage of your PhD.

We suggest the following approximate structure for your summary, averaging 200-300 words per section:

•   Background

•   Research Question

•   Approach/Method

•   Expected/Actual Outcomes

  1.   Further work

  2.   References

  3.   Biography

Summaries should be prepared in PDF format, with a minimum margin size of 1-inch  (all round), and with no headers, footers or page numbers. Copyright-cleared or rights-free illustrations in color or monochrome (ideally at least 300 dpi) are welcome, and should be inserted within the text where appropriate. Full bibliographic references should be given at the end for all in-text citations. Accepted summaries and biographies will be distributed at the conference.

Presentation Format

Each person should expect to present their research in 30-minute blocks of time. In order to provide time for feedback, plan to limit your presentation to 15 minutes, thus allowing another 15 minutes of audience feedback.

Review Process

Space permitting, all graduates who meet the deadline, format, and topic requirements will be invited to participate and give a brief oral presentation of their work. If the number of submissions exceed the time available, a rapid peer-review selection process will be based on the usual criteria of originality, scientific importance and relevance to the COSIT themes.
