Counseling & Therapy Services (CATS)
Limitations of Services
Our services are general outpatient counseling and psychiatric services oriented to the lives of UNM students. Therefore, there are service limitations necessitated by our role in the University and the resources to fulfill that role.
Student's requests for care sometimes exceed the service capacity of our staff. Therefore, it is necessary to limit the length of treatment available to any one student. During high demand times for service, students may have to wait for a regularly scheduled appointment.
CATS is unable to provide care to students who are involved in litigation or court cases because of the time needed to do the necessary duties. CATS is also unable to provide split care with community providers.
Individuals who need more intensive care than what CATS provides have to be referred to appropriate clinical providers or programs in the community. CATS always stands ready to provide emergency and crisis care for students.
SHAC, including CATS, does not provide medical or psychological evaluations for disability under the ADA. Students who need such evaluations are referred to UNM Accessibility Services, Mesa Vista Hall.
