Travel Health for Students, Staff & Faculty

Are you (or your department) planning a trip? Plan early for all of your travel needs! The SHAC International Travel Clinic offers travel consultations to all UNM students, staff, and faculty (and their adult family members or travel companions).

SHAC health practitioners and staff can talk to you about travel risks, and they will determine which routine, recommended, and/or required travel immunizations need to be considered, depending on your individual needs, activities, and destinations. Our staff includes a practitioner who has received a Certificate in Travel Health through the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM). The SHAC Immunization Clinic is authorized by the State of New Mexico to administer yellow fever vaccine, and uses the International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by the World Health Organization. The SHAC Pharmacy stocks malaria medications as well as all travel vaccines—everything from typhoid to Japanese encephalitis.

While some travel destinations do not require immunizations (and the risks for infections are remote), it’s still important to be up-to-date on your routine immunizations. Routine immunizations are often missed (or lacking), which can put you at increased risk of becoming ill. Travelers visiting friends and relatives are often at a higher risk of contracting preventable infections (such as hepatitis A, malaria, influenza, and/or typhoid), as they are under the false assumption that they have long-lasting, natural immunity.

Travel Consultation Appointments: A 30-minute appointment for consultation and scheduling for immunizations is the initial step in preparing you for a safer trip. It’s recommended to plan early—at least six to eight weeks prior to the departure date, if possible. Some vaccines require multiple injections over time (six months for hepatitis B). Most importantly, immunizations take several weeks (or months) to become fully effective.

You will be asked to fill out the first page of the SHAC International Travel Clinic Questionnaire (.pdf) before you meet with a SHAC provider. You can print it out here, or you can fill it out at the Clinic before your appointment.
