Individuals assigned custody of or assigned responsibility for ionizing
radiation producing machines or radioactive materials shall:
A. Assure suitable and operable radiation survey instruments, personnel monitoring devices, and other equipment necessary for radiation safety in the laboratory are readily available.
B. Make or cause to have made area surveys; assure facilities are monitored and radioactive materials and other ionizing radiation sources are being properly handled and confined to designated areas. Records of such surveys and monitoring shall be maintained.
C. Assure all protocols are reviewed by the Radiation Control Committee prior to use of radioactive materials.
D. Follow applicable rules, regulations, guides, and recommendations for procurement, use, possession, storage, inventory, transfer, and disposition of radioactive materials and sources of ionizing radiation.
E. Assure that all personnel who work in radiation areas or with radioactive materials are aware of potential radiation hazards and are suitably trained in necessary precautions. Assure that no individual under 18 years of age is permitted to work in or visit a radiation use laboratory without RCC authorization. Assure that laboratories and other areas are labeled as required and controlled areas are restricted from a regulatory standpoint; that is, they shall be secured against access by unauthorized personnel.
F. Notify the Radiation Safety Officer immediately in the event of a radiation incident (spill, fire, contamination of atmosphere, person or area, or unauthorized release of radioactive materials, theft or loss of radioactive materials), and known or suspected overexposure of personnel to ionizing radiation in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulations Title 10 CFR Part 20 (10 CFR 20) and NMED Radiation Protection Regulations, Subpart 4. (See Attachment G.)
G. In the event that a permit holder will be gone from the UNM campus for an extended period, he/she must notify the Radiation Safety Officer of the individual permit holder on campus who will be responsible for the radiation related activities while the original permit holder is absent.
