V. RADIATION SAFETY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

All personnel must have a Training and Experience (T&E) Form and Statement of Certification on file with the Radiation Safety Division prior to working with radioactive materials (see Attachment E).  These personnel are to work under direct supervision of a radiation user approved to supervise others until the Committee has approved their training (under direct supervision means that the individual knows who their radiation supervisor is and that the supervisor is immediately available).  Work with sources of radiation by persons whose training is not approved by the RCC shall cease when the supervisor is not available.

The RCC has established three categories or levels in which individuals are approved for working with radioactive materials and/or radiation-producing machines under approved UNM permit holders.  These are:

  1. WDS - Individuals who must work With Direct Supervision of an authorized radiation supervisor.
  2. WODS - Individuals who may work With Out Direct Supervision.  These are individuals who have passed the Radiation Safety Course, Radiobiology 491L, CH-NE 230, CH-NE 323L, Introduction to Radiation Protection 401, X-ray Diffraction course or who demonstrate equivalent formal training and are qualified to work alone.  Those who show previous on-the-job training, and lack formal course training may demonstrate competence by passing the Radiation Safety Course by examination.
  3. SU - Supervisors of Use are individuals qualified to supervise others who work with radiation.  They will be identified by the RCC in its evaluation of their T & E forms.  A permit holder is a qualified supervisor of use.  A permit holder who wishes others under the permit to be a supervisor of use must request RCC evaluation of the individual’s qualifications.
All users of ionizing radiation must submit a completed T & E Form to the Radiation Safety Division.  Certain specific medical groups are exempt from this requirement.  Contact the Radiation Safety Division for details.
