ACCESS TO RESOURCES EXERCISE

Purpose:

This activity allows the participants to collect information and raise awareness and understanding of how access to resources varies according to gender, education, social status, race and in other ways.

Materials:

Three large drawings of a man, a woman and a couple; fifteen or more cards depicting different resources and possessions owned by community members (for example, cattle, cash, furniture, radio, trees, homes, bicycle, cart, jewelry, water pots); blank cards in case more are needed; and markers.

Procedure:

1.    Put the three large drawings in a row on a table or on the ground. The resource cards are scattered below the larger drawings. Blank cards and pens are made readily available.

2.    Together, participants sort the cards. One by one, the resource cards are placed in columns under the appropriate large drawing (either under the man, the woman or the couple), depending on who controls the resource.

3.    The facilitator should take note of resources over which consensus was hard to reach.

4.    When the sorting has ended, the facilitator should ask participants why they made the choices that they did.
