4. Remember Hypatia:

·  Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Hypatia (370-415 CE) was an astronomer, physicist, mathematician, and head of the Neo-Platonic School of Philosophy. She was the last scientist of the Alexandria library, which was considered the “brain” of the Western world and the center of learning. Hypatia never married, but had many suitors. She continued to teach even under threat from the Archbishop of Alexandria. Hypatia was killed by a Christian mob and her writings and the Alexandria library were burned (over half-million texts were lost). Hypatia’s murder and the destruction of the library were the symbolic beginning of the Dark Ages.

·  “Neo-Platonism is a progressive philosophy, and does not expect to state final conditions to men whose minds are finite. Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is a best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond.” (Hypatia)
