The Christopher A. W. McGee Scholarship

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

THE 2009 CHRISTOPHER A. McGEE ESSAY AWARD
Up to $1000 in scholarship money!

The UNM Department of Sociology invites submissions of student papers for the 2010 Christopher A. McGee Essay Award Scholarships. This competition is open to undergraduate Sociology and Criminology majors with one or more semesters remaining until graduation.

1. Criteria for Evaluation: Submitted papers will be evaluated on quality of writing, logical coherence, and mastery of sociological concepts.

2. Amount, Number and Character of Awards: Awards will be applied to the winners' student accounts, rather than being cash prizes.

The number and amount of awards will depend upon the number and quality of submissions as well as the funds available this year. Awards will not exceed $1000, and the largest award given may be less.

3. Eligibility: Competition for awards is open to full-time and part-time UNM undergraduate students majoring in sociology or criminology who will graduate after May 2010.

4. Presentation and Length: Submitted papers are typically between 10 and 25 pages long, but somewhat shorter or longer papers also will be considered.

Papers should be presented in professional journal style, such as APA or that given in the "Manuscript Submission" guidelines of the American Sociological Review. Papers should be well-written and free of all grammatical and spelling errors.

The title page must include the submitting student’s name, phone number, email, and mailing address, and indicate that the paper is a submission for the McGee Award competition for the 2009-10 academic year. All submissions must contain an abstract no longer than half a double spaced page.

5. Due Date: Papers must be submitted to the Sociology Department Office in room 1103 of the Social Sciences Building by April 30, 2010. Awards will be announced by June 1, 2010.
