2007 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards

On September 27, 2007, the UNM School of Engineering announced five alumni who are the winners of the 2007 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards.
The awards are chosen through a nomination process that includes alumni and other engineering professionals. Honorees are chosen for their contributions to the community, their profession and to the world in which we live.
The 2007 Distinguished Engineering Alumni were honored at a gala attended by alumni, faculty, staff, students, friends, and family members.
2007 Distinguished Engineering Alumni
Harold R. Bosch BSCE - 1971
Harold Bosch, Director of the Turner Fairbank Highway
Research Center, is an internationally recognized expert in wind
engineering. He is called upon to provide expert advice and
opinion on most long span bridge designs in the nation.
Sajjad H. Durrani ScD EE - 1963
Dr. Sajjad Durrani managed NASA’s research in satellite
communications and taught courses in 25 countries. Since his
retirement, numerous agencies including the FCC, Department
of State, and United Nations have called upon his expertise.
Thomas J. Nesbitt BSCE - 1948
Thomas Nesbitt founded Nesbitt Contracting Co. in 1955. He
was a pioneer in utilizing recycled asphalt to save time, money
and natural resources, and later used state-of-the-art technology
to perform cold in-place recycling of asphalt pavement.
Heinz W. Schmitt MSME - 1962
As Vice President of Weapons Systems at Sandia National
Laboratories, Dr. Heinz Schmitt provided key leadership in
nuclear weapons technology and policy development. He also
led Sandia’s initiative in Advanced Manufacturing.
Adrian B. Chernoff BSME/MSME - 1996/1999
Adrian Chernoff is a prolific inventor with 54 confirmed patents
and another 50 pending. His leadership in designing the first
skateboard car for General Motors earned him both the Master
Inventor and Chairman’s Honors Award.
