5-26-10 --The School of Engineering held its Spring 2010 Convocation to honor graduates on Saturday, May 15.
The Convocation is the School's own ceremony specifically to honor graduates, in the presence of their family and friends. Graduate students were met on the stage by their faculty thesis/dissertation advisor for the traditional "hooding" ceremony.
The Convocation began and ended with a colorful academic procession, led by a staff member carrying a banner in front of the School of Engineering degree candidates. Dr. William E. Baker, Professor Emeritus, Department of Mechanical Engineering (at left) was the faculty marshall and carried the ceremonial staff in the procession.
The Breece Award is given to the SOE senior with the highest grade point average from each graduating class. The receipients of this award consistenly have grave point averages higher than 4.0, reflecting a majority of A+ grades throughout their undergraduate courses. The Breece Award recipient for Spring 2010 was Ryan A. Clark, who received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
SpeakersThe keynote speaker was Dr. Cleve Moler, chairman and chief scientist at The MathWorks. Dr. Moler was a professor of math and computer science for almost 20 years at the University of Michigan, Stanford University and the University of New Mexico.
Dr. Moler spent five years with two computer hardware manufacturers, the Intel Hypercube organization and Ardent Computer, before joining The MathWorks full-time in 1989. In addition to being the author of the first version of MATLAB, Moler is one of the authors of the LINPACK and EISPACK scientific subroutine libraries. He is co-author of three textbooks on numerical methods.
Two School of Engineering students spoke at the ceremony: Kelly Montoya, who received her B.S. in Civil Engineering, and Kshanti Greene, who received her Ph.D. in Computer Science.
Five members of the School of Engineering graduating class of 1960 came to the convocation ceremony.
We honor their lifelong connection to the SOE and extend a warm greeting to those Golden Graduates who were unable to join us for the ceremony.
