Unlike most schools in the nation, freshmen can enroll directly into the School of Engineering and take engineering and computer science courses from day one. An orientation provided by Engineering Student Services for freshmen and transfer students helps smooth the transition to UNM. During orientation, students meet individually with ESS advisors who help them chart their course at the SOE. Students learn about the degrees and programs offered as well as polices and expectations. After they create a tentative schedule for their first semester, students meet with advisors one-on-one. ESS advisors make sure that the schedule will prepare the student for their program of study and is appropriate for each individual.
Engineering advisement begins each year in April and continues until May. ESS advisors meet with pre-major students and any other students who are interested in majoring in engineering or computer science.
