Engineering Student Services (ESS) provides academic resources, professional development advice, and community building experiences for students pursing engineering and computer science at UNM.

Services for Incoming and Current Undergraduate SOE Students

Advisement
ESS advisors help students make a successful transition from high school to college, fulfill requirements for admission to their department, and receive academic and professional development support. Students meet with academic advisors to review schedule plans, course load, and specific classes at Lobo Orientation and while students are pre-majors. Read more about advisement and get contact information for advisors.

Mentoring and Tutoring
Students can receive tutoring services in all levels of math and in each field of engineering by their senior-level peers.  For more information, contact Steve Peralta, Director of Engineering Student Services: 505-277-1417 (office) or 505 480-2419 (cell);  speralta@unm.edu.

Scholarships
Financing a college education isn’t easy. As college costs increase nationwide, paying for a college education has become one of the greatest financial challenges for many families. Fortunately, the scholarships and fellowship programs available through the School of
Engineering, along with the already low cost of tuition at UNM, make obtaining a premier engineering degree more affordable than ever. Staff and faculty in the SOE are committed to assisting students and parents in finding the resources to make a sound investment. You'll find that ESS coordinates a variety of scholarships for incoming freshmen, undergraduate students, and graduate students from federal, private or corporate funding sources.

Student Organizations
Engineering Student Services encourages all SOE students to participate in student organizations. These organizations and their national affiliates offer valuable support, educational and professional opportunities as well as social outlets.

Programs for Pre-College Students

ESS offers summer science and math pre-college programs to students in grades K-12, including two intensive four-week summer residential programs that help high school students prepare for the rigors of UNM's engineering and computer science curricula.

ESS also offers SOE students programs, NA-STEM, NSF Scholarship Program, and WISE, which support and promote student interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Recruitment Activities

The ESS team, as well as School of Engineering faculty and advisors, conduct recruiting activities to build a pipeline to get more students into technical fields. The recruiting and outreach process starts with the very youngest learners and extends through high school. These activities include:

  • making presentations for elementary, middle and high school students;
  • helping with science fairs
  • attending high school college fairs
  • coordinating the School of Engineering's annual open house
