10-01-08 -- Joseph L. Cecchi, Dean of the UNM School of Engineering, and Julia Fulghum, Interim Vice President for Research, have been named Fellows of AVS, an organization devoted to the science and technology of materials, interfaces, and processing.
Fellows of AVS are chosen for their “sustained and outstanding scientific and technical contributions in areas of interest to AVS.” AVS is a not-for-profit professional society that promotes communication between academia, government laboratories, and industry for the purpose of sharing research and development findings over a broad range of technologically relevant topics. Fellows candidates are required to have at least 10 years of sustained and outstanding technical contributions to materials science and related fields. Only 0.5% of AVS members are fellows.
Dean Cecchi is recognized for “seminal contributions in vacuum and plasma technology, and for sustained contributions to science and engineering through collaborative and innovative academic research.” Vice President Fulghum is recognized for “pioneering development and application of quantitative methods for near-surface characterization of complex heterogeneous materials and for professional leadership within the AVS and larger scientific community.”
Awards will be presented at the AVS Awards Assembly during the annual symposium in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2008.
