Students wishing to pursue graduate programs in engineering must meet both the requirements for admission to graduate study at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and the prerequisites established by the department through which the desired program is offered. Prospective students lacking the required prerequisites may be advised to satisfy deficiencies before admissions consideration. Admission decisions are made directly by the department.

Completion of the Master of Science degree is offered through a thesis and a non-thesis plan. The minimum credit hours for the thesis plan ranges from 30 to 32 credit hours with a minimum of 24 course work hours and 6 to 9 thesis hours. The non-thesis plan requires between 33 and 35 course work hours. The Master of Engineering degree requires a total of 36 credit hours. Successful completion for all graduate degrees requires a minimum academic average of 3.0.

Completion of the Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Engineering, Computer Science, Optical Science and Engineering, and Nanoscience and Microsystems require a minimum of 24 credit hours beyond the master's degree or 48 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree, excluding master's thesis and dissertation hours.
