How to Prepare

For UNM Freshmen

UNM freshmen are students who are just beginning their academic career at UNM. If they meet the admission requirements, they are admitted directly into the School of Engineering as a Pre Major (general engineering) and begin working on their required courses for admission to their degree granting department. Typically, if a beginning Freshman is eligible to take Math 123 (Trigonometry) AND Math 150 (Pre-calculus) based on their ACT or SAT math scores, they are eligible for direct admission to the Engineering Student Services premajor program.

PLANNING YOUR FIRST SEMESTER

To begin your studies in the School of Engineering, you will need to review several factors.

  • look at your ACT/SAT scores and the SOE Math Placement
  • review the related courses you have taken in High School, or another institution, to determine if you have the necessary academic preparation
  • honestly evaluate your own skills and preferences

In collaboration with your advisor, decide which courses you will take to begin your studies. For your first semester you should enroll in:

  • Math
  • English
  • Science
  • UNM Core Curriculum Electives

You may choose additional courses after consulting with your advisor.

Attend a Summer Program Before the Fall Semester

Incoming freshmen can get a jump start on engineering, math or science by attending the 4-week residential Freshman Summer Bridge Program. Participants undertake an intensive study of math, English composition, and computer science in preparation for college level work. Students successfully completing the program receive a generous stipend and college credit.

The Freshman Summer Bridge Program is the winner of the 2000 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering for providing excellent student support services, scholarship opportunities, and summer programs.
