The School of Engineering is engaged in a variety of programs to encourage interest and participation in science, technology, engineering, and math. These activities are designed for students ranging from the very youngest learners to those preparing to enter college.

Freshman Summer Bridge Program (FSBP)

FSBP

Who: Incoming freshmen in Engineering, Mathematics and Science.

The annual Freshmen Summer Bridge Program is a four-week summer residential program. Participants undertake an intensive study of math, English composition, and computer science in preparation for college level work. Students successfully completing the program receive a generous stipend and college credit.

The Freshman Summer Bridge Program is the winner of the 2000 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering for providing excellent student support services, scholarship opportunities, and summer programs. For more information: http://www.unm.edu/~fsbp

Summer Transportation Institute

Who: 11-12th Grade

Engineering Student Services, with the support of the U.S. Department of Transportation, sponsors a Summer Transportation Institute (STI) for high school students. This three week residential program takes place on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque. 

The curriculum focuses on the major modes of transportation in our region; land transportation, air transportation and transportation safety. The archeological uniqueness of the Southwest will be highlighted as an important component in ancient transport and trade routes. The program is free of charge. ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

Who: Students entering 6-8 grade

Dates: Two weeks in June

Deadline for Application: Mid-May

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is a two-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. Each day, campers will attend classes that include problem solving, research and communication skills incorporated with biology, chemistry, physics,
environmental sciences, earth sciences, engineering and design concepts, and field excursions. Certified classroom teachers and university faculty will teach the classes. Students attend the camp free of charge.

Students selected for the summer camp will be housed at the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque. Participants’ lodging and meals will be provided by camp sponsors. Minimum eligibility criteria for interested middle school students is as follows:

  • Entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall
  • GPA of at least “B” overall and in mathematics and science
  • Interested in mathematics and science

Pre-College Math & Science Program

Who: K-12th Grade

This program is designed to instill in K-12 an interest in pursuing careers in engineering, math and science.  The Pre-college program also offers a Summer Majic camp where they learn about these careers and attend a variety of educational, cultural and recreational activities.
