Student Research

Since UNM became a research university almost 20 years ago, research has become an integral part of the School of Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs. Opportunities vary from company-sponsored tasks to those designed and managed by the School of Engineering professors. Following are some examples of student research.

Intelligent Energy

School of Engineering graduate students Mario Ortiz, Will Brenneman, Anthony Menicucci, and Dan Fisher are working with mechanical engineering assistant professor Andrea Mammoli to help solve the energy challenge with smart buildings and a smarter grid.

Better Biofuels

Andrew Delariva, a chemical engineering graduate student researching noble metal catalysis, was one of the first UNM students to participate in the Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE), a grant funded by NSF designed to foster international research partnerships, expand research capabilities, and provide international education opportunities for students.

Studying The Great (Fire)Wall of China and Internet Censorship

Computer science doctoral student Jong Chun Park is assisting Jed Crandall, associate professor of computer science, to study Internet censorship.

New Methods, New Materials

Eslam Soliman, a civil engineering doctoral student, is a research assistant to Mahmoud Taha, associate professor of civil engineering and Regents' Lecturer. He is helping to produce blast-resistant composites for use in the construction of buildings and bridges.
