Plus 9 elective hours above 300, 3 must be at the 400 level. Spanish 301 may be repeated for university credit as topic changes, however, only 3 hours of Spanish 301 are applicable toward the Spanish major. A student may follow a general course of studies or emphasize one of the following areas:

  • PENINSULAR LITERATURE
  • LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE
  • SOUTHWEST HISPANIC STUDIES
  • HISPANIC LINGUISTICS

For those students wishing to continue their studies in Spanish at the graduate level it is recommended that they take all four survey courses, 411, 412, 431, 432.
In addition, work in another foreign language at the 202 or 276 level (or equivalent) must be completed. The Department encourages students to take Portuguese to fulfill the second language requirement. Because of the similarity of the two languages, students can achieve a high level of proficiency in Portuguese after completing the intensive two course sequence of Port 275-276. Students planning to major in Spanish should consult with the Department undergraduate advisor.

SPANISH 301

These courses are designed particularly for students who have just completed Spanish 202 / 212 / 276 or for those who have taken Spanish 301 once, but need more intermediate-level skill development. These courses help students further develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the intermediate level. Students with more advanced or native language skills are strongly encouraged to take courses above the 301 level.

** STUDENTS WHO MAJOR OR MINOR IN SPANISH MAY SUBSTITUTE A HIGHER LEVEL COURSE FOR THE 301 REQUIREMENT.**

International Programs

Oral proficiency is both a major goal and a professional expectation of Spanish majors and minors. Students should seek out immersion experiences at home and abroad, formally and informally. Consult the Undergraduate Advisor, your professors, the Latin American Iberian Institute , and the Office of International Programs and Studies for opportunities to study in Spain and Latin America. Up to one half of the total credit hours required for either a Spanish major, second major, or minor, may be completed through study abroad programs. It is recommended that students consult with the Undergraduate Advisor before going abroad.
