Undergraduate Portuguese First Major Requirements

First Major:

  • 30 hours in Portuguese courses numbered 200 and above.
  • 12 hours (or equivalent skill level) in another foreign language.

Required Portuguese Course Work

Choose one of the two following options
(for a total of 12 OR 6 credit hours);

  • 275 Intensive Beginning Portuguese
    AND
    276 Intensive Intermediate Portuguese (6 credit hours each/12 hours total)

    OR

    277 Intensive Portuguese for Spanish Speakers (6 credit hours)

Choose two courses from the following options
(for a total of 6 credit hours):

  • 301 Conversation and Pronunciation - and/or
  • 311 Culture and Composition - and/or
  • 312 Culture and Conversation

Choose remaining elective hours from 300 and 400 level courses
(either 12 or 15 credit hours, based on above choices) ;

  • 301 Conversation and Pronunciation
    OR
    311 Culture and Composition
    OR
    312 Culture and Conversation
  • 335 Brazilian Popular Culture
  • 414 Topics in Luso-Brazilian Literature and Culture
  • 416 Brazilian Cinema
  • 417 Popular Brazilian Music
  • 421 Brazilian Theater
  • 457 Encounters with the New World I
  • 458 Encounters with the New World II
  • 461 Topics in Brazilian Literature

Spanish is an excellent second language for students in Portuguese because of the similarity of the two languages, the geographical proximity, and the job opportunities available to speakers of both languages.
