What Spanish class should I take next?

Spanish 301
is an intermediate-level culture class in which students develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Spanish. It is for students who have just completed Spanish 202, 212, or 276 or who need more skill development before taking Spanish 302 and 307.

Spanish 301 is a prerequisite for all Spanish courses above the 302 level,
e x c e p t for those students who have achieved an equivalent proficiency as native or heritage language speakers - or - at other institutions - or - through informal language immersion experiences.
Waving the Spanish 301 requirement for the major & minor:
Students who have advanced-level or fluent Spanish skills should not take Spanish 301, and may obtain a waiver from the Undergraduate Advisor.

If you are currently completing Spanish 301, you are now ready to take:

        • Spanish 302 Developing Spanish Writing Skills - or -
        • Spanish 307 Introduction to Hispanic Literature (or both 302 and 307 simultaneously),
        • - or - one of several classes in linguistics or Southwest Hispanic Studies at the 350-370 level.

Spanish 302 students develop confidence and skill using Spanish as a vehicle for written expression. Students write a series of short papers, including descriptions, narrations and arguments. They also engage in a grammar review to support their writing skills. This course is a prerequisite for most Spanish courses numbered above 302.

Spanish 307 students read short stories, poems and plays by some of the best writers of Spain and Spanish America, and they learn how to think and write critically about a literary text. Students should take Span 302 before or at the same time as they take Span 307. This course is a prerequisite for all other literature classes in Spanish.

If you find Spanish 301 very difficult, consider taking another topic at this level.

Up to 6 hours of Spanish 301 count toward a second major, up to 9 hours toward a minor, but only 3 hours toward a first major.

If you are a native speaker who speaks and reads Spanish well, take:

        • Spanish 302 Developing Spanish Writing Skills if you need additional writing instruction - or -
        • Spanish 307 Introduction to Hispanic Literature.

If you have completed 302 and 307:

Take a course in Spanish Linguistics (350s), Southwest Hispanic Studies (370s) or Spanish literature & culture (400s).

If you are currently completing Spanish 302, you are now ready to take:

Spanish 307 Introduction to Hispanic Literature - or – one of several Spanish Linguistics or Southwest Studies classes at the advanced 300-level.
