The Program
Established in 1979, The UNM graduate program in Sport Administration has a proud tradition of preparing students to provide leadership in positions such as high school athletic directors, college athletic administrators, directors of amateur and professional sport organizations, sport psychologists, and university professors.
The program is NASPE/NASSM approved and offers both the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The M.S. program is comprehensive in nature, but coursework can be designed around the core requirements to meet unique objectives of each student.
There are currently three tracks available in the M.S. program:
1) General Sport Administration
2) Emphasis in Coaching
3) Sport Administration with Administrative Licensure - For those who wish to go into public school administration.
The Ph.D. program provides students with the choice of a research focus in one of five areas:
1) Interscholastic / Intercollegiate Athletic Administration
2) Sport Marketing
3) Sport Leadership
4) Risk Management in Sport
5) Psycho/Social Aspects of SportThe Program also requires a minor/supporting area where students, in concert with their advisor, may tailor their program of study to meet specific educational and employment objectives.
Students entering the program with a previous degree from a variety of disciplines other than sport administration such as physical education, business administration, journalism, marketing, economics or other relevant majors will be considered.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to prepare graduate students for a wide range of sport-related positions within organizations that are typically educational or professional in nature and scope. We strive to provide a superior educational experience to students by supporting our teaching with research in areas of sport marketing, risk management, leadership and psychology.
In addition we provide service and program visibility through community involvement and representation in regio nal and national organizations.
In congruence with this mission we provide educational opportunities and experiences in the following areas: a) interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics: b) amateur and professional sport: c) public and private sport organizations and d) the academic study of sport.
Entrance Requirements
Entrance information concerning admission and program requirements is provided in the University of New Mexico Graduate bulletin. In addition, the Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences has developed a guide to be used by all department graduate students to ensure that all graduate requirements are satisfied at the appropriate times. The criteria for admission to the graduate programs in Sport Administration include the following:
1. Bachelor's degree for M.S. program - Master's degree for Ph.D. program.
2. GPA in most recent degree of 3.0 or better.
3. Official GRE or GMAT Scores
4. Three letters of recommendation. Letters should be addressed to the Director; Graduate Programs in Sport Administration, Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences, MSC04 2610, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131-1251
5. Letter of intent. This should consist of a written statement of career goals and area of interest in Sport Administration.
6. A completed online application form including official transcripts from all previously attended institutions.
7. Professional Resume.
MASTER'S APPLICANTS: Deadlines for priority consideration are listed below:
For Fall Semester: priority deadline March 1st - final deadline August 1st
For Spring Semester: priority deadline November 1 - final deadline December 15th
For Summer Semester: priority deadline April 1 - final deadline May 1stAll materials including transcripts must be received by the dates listed above.

For Summer Semester: January 1DOCTORAL APPLICANTS: Admission to the doctoral program is highly competitive. Typically, only a small percentage of applicants are admitted each year.
Applications are reviewed one time per year for admission in Fall Semester. For best consideration, all application materials should be received by February 15.
It is the intent of the Sport Administration Program to recruit, screen and admit only highly qualified and academically talented students. It is the expectation that high admission standards and a rigorous program of studies will produce highly competent professionals who will be in demand.
Other Information
1. Both written and oral proficiency in the English language is expected and necessary for successful completion of the program.
2. Comprehensive written examinations are required for all graduate degrees with a Sport Administration concentration. In addition, oral comprehensive exams are required for all doctoral candidates.
