Johnson A Profile  (the introductory chapter of Nineteenth-Century Rhetoric in North America)

Book

Chapters 1 through 4 in Bacon, The Humblest May Stand Forth: Rhetoric, Empowerment, and Abolition..  (It’s now in the bookstore and on 2-hour reserve in Zimmerman.)

I recommend using a mapping device similar to the sample I handed out for chapters 3 and 4 for several reasons. One is so that you can see how Bacon “voices” the marginalized not by plotting individual talent/performance but rather in terms of the rhetorical devices available to them: “rhetorics of . . .” & various forms of media.  “Publicness” is a key value—as it is for Buchanan.
