Handout 1: UNM Account Information and Publishing your pages

Tips that will save you trouble
Bring disks to class always (zip disks recommended)
Don't forget to take your disk with you when you leave class!
Always save files to your UNM account.
Always make backup files on your home hard drive.
If you work at home, remember to bring your files on disk or to upload them to your UNM account from your home computer.

Procedures
First Step: Create UNM account (if you haven't already)
1. Choose the New Account icon on your desktop, which takes you to a CIRT page (under "Computing" on the UNM homepage).
2. Choose "Create an Account."
3. Follow the instructions.
4. Using Mirada, test your account by sending email to yourself.

Second Step: Learn to store and retrieve text files from your UNM account
1. Find the UNM Central File icon on your desktop. Log into your account.
2. Create a "Word Documents" Folder. Use the "create new folder" command.
(Don't mess with those strange files in your account--they're associated with your mailbox.)
3. Create an MSWord test file.
4. Save the MSW test file in your newly created "Word Documents" File.

Third Step: Create a public directory file for documents you want visible on the Web.
Within your account, create a "public_html" directory (folder). Use the "create new folder" command. Files that you wish to be visible on the Web must be housed in this folder. Later you'll create subdirectories or folders within the public folder to manage your files.

Fourth Step: Saving images and HTM files to your public_html account.
1. Copy several images from the following web site or a site of your choice.
http://www-ns.rutgers.edu/doc-images/

2. Type in the URL to see if they're visible. The URL will look like this:

www.unm.edu/~yourlogon-name/filename.jpg

(You may want to create an "images" sub-folder if you intend to house many images on your site.)
3. Create a simple Dreamweaver file that will serve for the time being as your home page. Name this file "index.htm". If you already have a home page created, see if you can upload it in Dreamweaver, fix any glitches, and save it as a Dreamweaver file in your UNM public directory.

Note: If your page is not visible and you think you've done everything right, first check to be sure you saved the file in the public_html folder. Then log into your UNM account via telnet (aix.unm.edu or musca.unm.edu) and at the unix prompt (%) type: webupdate.
