·        Retrieving text files

·        Creating a simple .htm file

·        Uploading an .htm file

·        Signing on to the class listserv

Tips that save you trouble

·        Bring disks to class always!

·        Always back up files on your home hard drive or on another disk.

·        Always back up files for this class on the UNM server.

Step 1: Create a UNM account  (if you haven't already). Use your professional name.

1.      Choose the New Account icon on your desktop, which takes you to a CIRT page (under “Computing” on the UNM homepage).

2.      Choose "Create an Account."

3.      Follow the instructions.

4.      Using Mirada, test your account by sending email to yourself or a person who will respond immediately.

Step 2: Learn to store and retrieve text files from your UNM account.

1.      Create a MSW file in which you introduce yourself to class members (talk about your history, training, work experience, life as a nonstudent (especially if you are a nontraditional student), courses, hopes & dreams, aspirations for saving the world.  Later you'll post this file to the class listserv. Give it an appropriate name--8 characters or less, saving it to desktop of disk.

2.      Find the UNM Central File icon on your desktop. Log into your account. You should see two new icons appear: Personal Files and Disconnect Personal Files.

3.      Drag the Word file you just made into your account alongside all the PINE files OR create a special folder for Word documents. You can also save the file directly to the Z drive, once your personal account is on the desktop.

4.      Don't mess with those strange files in your account—they’re probably associated with your mailbox!

5.      Practice retrieving the file next time you come to class.

Step 3: Learn to create, store, and retrieve .htm files from your UNM account.

1. Create a public_html directory (folder) in your UNM account.  Use the "create new folder" command.

2.      Begin this practice html exercise by creating a Word file that includes whatever else you want to put there.  Suggestions:  Use this page to begin creating an online resume: Put in contact information (name, address, phone, email) and choose appropriate font sizes and layout.  Otherwise, start (briefly) on your home page, putting in your name and some information about yourself. Save this file as an .htm (web page) file on disk or on the desktop. Name it  "resume" or “personal.”  The file name will look like this:  personal.htm

3.     Store (upload) this file to your account, placing it in your public_html folder.

4.      Open Netscape or Explorer.  Check to see if your file is available for public viewing.  The URL for this file will be < www.unm.edu/~yourlogin/filename.htm >

5.      Practice this move by editing your .htm file in MSW and then uploading again to note change.

Step 4: Sign on to the class listserv.

Information yet to come. I’m working on the listserv.

Let me know when you are ready to show me that you’ve completed everything except the listserv so that I can watch you perform these steps with great ease.
