ASSIGNMENT #2
USING SPSS TO CREATE AND EVALUATE AN INDEX
Your assignment, due in one week, is to access SPSS and select items for an index, run the Reliability program and interpret the output. We’ve discussed what an index is in class, so you know that you’re looking for items that tap one dimension but measure various aspects of that dimension. For example, the various questions about abortion attitudes all involve the same concept but examine different conditions under which the respondent feels that an abortion is acceptable.
Your task is to select not less than three variables, which meet the above criteria, run the program, and interprets the results. We’ll be doing examples in class so it shouldn’t be too difficult. An index can be either an independent or dependent variable. You should begin thinking of how you can use indexes in your paper. You may interpret the results by writing on the printed output or send me the assignment via e-mail. In addition to assessing the reliability, you should also make an effort to determine if the index is valid, using more than one method.
