Precis Search Resources

The Web remains a quite disorganized environment and for your weekly search to be most productive, you will have to locate
and become familiar with both Internet search engines and comprehensive telecommunications sites. Below I have listed those sites I find useful and which have been useful to previous classes. If you find others sites which are especially useful for this course, please let me know.

Internet Search Engines:

I'll give you the talk in class so to spare you here, but because of the way information is generated, placed on, indexed by, and searched for on the Web, no one search engine can satisfy all your needs. Find one or two which do two things for you: 1. access the largest possible database of information; and 2. allow for advanced searching strategies. The two I normally turn to first are HotBot and Altavista. For a nice access point to many search engines, go to Netscape's page. Finally, consider using one of the Meta search engines, such as DogPile.

Telecommunications Search Sites:

Two sites are very useful for searching a wide range of telecommunications publications: Network World Fusion and Techweb.

General Telecommunications Sites:

These sites provide access to two kinds of information: 1. very current; and 2. encyclopedic. To keep you busy, this site boasts over 5,500 link to telecommunications resources! The Wiltel Group offers the Telecommunications Library is also excellent and gives good coverage of issues related to the business of telecommunications. Finally, the Telecoms Virtual Library completes the list.

If you want to stay current with telecommunications affairs, and these change daily if not hourly, these sites will help you do so:

The two sites mentioned above - Network World Fusion and Techweb.
A publication by Mecklermedia - Internet News
Another good place is by the Ziff-Davis publishing company - Interactive Week.

Finally, the web site for the text contains numerous links to relevant books and magazines.
