The Engineering Student Services (ESS) with the support of the U.S. Department of Transportation is sponsoring a Summer Transportation Institute (STI) for secondary school students. This four week residential program will take place on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque. The program is free of charge.
Program Objectives:
1) Generate an awareness of the job opportunities in the transportation industry
2) Stimulate and excite students to pursue careers in the transportation industry
3) Expose the students to college success skills.2009 STI Program Dates: Sunday, June 7th through Friday, June 26th.
The curriculum will focus on the major modes of transportation in our region; land transportation, air transportation and transportation safety. The archeological uniqueness of the Southwest will be highlighted as an important component in ancient transport and trade routes.
Selection Criteria:
* Students must be enrolled in a secondary school in the state of New Mexico.
* Students must be a high school junior or senior in the Fall of 2009.
* Students with a grade point average of 3.0 will be considered favorably.
* DEADLINE: Friday, April 10, 2009 (Will extend if necessary to May 8th).
* Applications must include:
* A personal statement (400 to 500) words on why the student should be considered.
* One letter of recommendation from a mathematics or science instructor.
* A copy of current transcript.
* A copy of standardized scores, if available.
