Sustainability Studies Minor

Sustainability Studies provides the tools to enable students to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As students and teachers we create and shape a learning environment which balances environmental protection, economic vitality, and social responsibility thereby shaping a framework to provide the basic needs of health, food, water, shelter, and transportation.

Sustainability Studies spawns experiential learning, research, and service activities to actively implement practical solutions to create a sustainable future now! In Sustainability Studies we want to empower students as innovators of sustainable strategies via entrepreneurial engagements, community engagement and environmental awareness. Sustainability Studies at UNM promotes and implements projects with synergistic activities to nurture community and help shape a culture of sustainability for the bioregion of the Southwest.

Interdisciplinary Minor in Sustainability

The Minor in Sustainability provides:
Awareness of how institutions, ideologies and power structures shape individual choices.
Focus on the basic needs that drive human decisions that impact the cultural and natural world.
Integrative interactions which demonstrate the complexity of human-global relatedness.

The goal of Sustainability Studies is to guide individuals to voluntarily assess and satisfy basic needs and implement sustainable practice by participating creatively in dynamically responsive interconnected communities. As an avenue for creating synergies among disciplines, the Sustainability Studies Minor complements the student’s major degree program in disciplines that reflect sustainable practice. With guidance from the Sustainability Studies Faculty, the Minor provides a roadmap for students to explore discipline-specific knowledge in sustainability, and apply this knowledge to the design, selection, and implementation of values, practices, technologies, and strategies.

Objectives:
Surround the student with colleagues, mentors, and peers who understand and practice sustainability.
Provide access to thriving examples of sustainable communities on and off campus
Facilitate the integration of theory and practice through service learning, research, and outreach projects.
