Student NewsCongratulations to Siobhan McLoughlin who successfully defended her Philosophy dissertation, The Freedom of the Good: A Study of Plato's Ethical Concept of Freedom, with us in December 2011. Doctoral Student Stephen Harris has been awarded the Fay Sawyier Pre-Doctoral Teaching Fellowship at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The fellowship is for a year, and is renewable for a second year. Stephen will teach Asian philosophy as well as one introductory Humanities course. Congratulations Stephen! Dr. Mark Ralkowski has won the prestigious Popejoy Dissertation Prize for 2011. Mark's dissertation on "Heidegger's Platonism" competed against all those produced in Humanities and Art/Art History for the past two years. Dissertations nominated by departments were considered by a panel of judges for "excellence at the highest academic and technical level, good literary form, and general human interest." The prize will be presented at spring commencement and includes an award of $1000. This is a well-deserved capstone to a brilliant career at UNM. Mark, we'll miss you!
