Course Description: This
course prepares students for the GED test by introducing the basics of the GED
and using the Internet to improve specific skills as needed by the individual
student. The instructor will communicate with students regularly
through email and provide instruction and support during weekly meetings.
Prerequisites: Familiar with the computer and able to use the mouse
and keyboard to complete assignments as well as a CASAS reading score of 230 or
higher. Ability to work
independently is a must. Major Course Objectives: While preparing for the GED test, we will also strive to improve study skills, computer skills and communication skills to ensure success in higher education, employment and community involvement. Textbooks and Materials: Students need regular access to the Internet to participate. Internet access is available at public libraries as well as our state-of-the-art computer labs on campus for students who do not have access from home. Textbooks are provided upon request for additional study. The most commonly used textbook is Contemporary’s GED Essential. To further supplement instruction, the MHC GED Interactive software is available in the lab as well as on the Internet by request. Students are strongly encouraged to come to the campus and take advantage of this software. Attendance Policy: Students must meet with the instructor weekly. The same information is covered in each weekly meeting, so students may attend different days and times as needed. Students who must miss a meeting must contact the instructor to remain in the course. Grading Policy: This is a test-preparation course and is not graded. However, students must complete a CASAS post-test after four weeks of attendance. Scores of 240 or higher are required on both tests before students can enroll in the Test-Taking Strategies workshop and register for the Official GED Test. Assignments: Every student begins with Lesson 1: Introduction to the GED, which includes an essay assignment to be emailed to the instructor. From there, optional assignments are posted on the course page and the instructor will recommend assignments to individual students using email. Students should spend at least 3 hours per week completing assignments. Library Usage: UNM-Valencia Campus has a wonderful library. GED students are encouraged to use the library and to read novels in addition to their coursework. Please see the instructor for a letter to take to the library and get a card. Publishing Student Writings: A goal for each student is to write an essay to be published on the Internet. There is a link on the instructor’s homepage to view examples. |
