February: African American History Month

 

Introduction 

In celebration of African American history month, we will look at the unique history of African Americans.  Please choose one of the assignments below to produce something to share with the rest of the class.  Each report or product will be posted on the Web site so other may gain from your experience.

Tasks and Resources

Choice #1: Slave Narratives

Read three slave narratives of your choice. Summarize these and compare the differences and similarities. Include graphics if you can.  Here are some Web sites to start with:

Choice #2: Civil War

Research events that lead to the Civil War, the battles of the Civil War or the end of the Civil War.  Write a brief summary and include graphics if you can.  Here are some Web sites to start with:

Choice #3: Reconstruction

Research the Reconstruction period in the South and how segregation was legally practiced. Write a brief summary and include graphics if you can.  Here are some Web sites to start with:

Choice #4: African American People

Research any African American person and write about why you chose this person and why this person is an important historical figure. Include graphics if you can.  Here is a Web directory to start with:

Choice #5: Civil Rights Movement

Research a few events or important people of the Civil Rights Movement. Write a brief summary and include graphics if you can. Here are some Web sites to start with:

Choice #6: Trivia Quizzes

Take a quiz or two, most of them help you find the answers if you are willing to take the time to look. Choose some interesting questions and answers to share. Also write about how quizzes help you learn. Here are a couple of sites with quizzes:

Choice #7: Create Your Own Search

Research your own ideas for African American history. The previous choices are merely suggestions with some Web sites already identified for you. They are not intended to limit your research. Learning is usually easier when we are enjoying what we're doing; so enjoy!  Write a brief summary and include graphics if you can.

Evaluation

Your report will be read by other members of the class and there will be a way for them to provide feedback.  Sharing or publishing our writing often motivates us to do our best work.
